USDA tightens nutrition standards for day care centers

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) — Children’s day care centers play a critical role in nourishing kids and teaching them healthy eating habits. In March, the United States Department of Agriculture announced updates to their nutrition standards for meals and snacks at day care centers enrolled in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

Through the CACFP, the USDA subsidizes healthy, nutritious food for thousands of day care centers across the country. Under the new standards, meals and snacks will include a greater variety of vegetables and fruit, more whole grains, and less added sugar and saturated fat.
