AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW/WAGT) — The Augusta Fire Department says they’ve suspended a member of their staff accused in the murder of a 1-year-old.

Charles Sconyers is suspended without pay, according to the Augusta Fire Department.

“The allegations against Charles Sconyers are not indicative of the quality of personnel or services provided by the Augusta Fire Department,” the statement said.

Sconyers is accused in a May 1 incident after he picked up his girlfriend’s son from daycare.

They returned to his girlfriend’s home, according to the report, and Sconyers says he heard a scream before he found the child face down on the patio.

Sconyers told investigators he gave emergency aid to the child until EMT’s arrived.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has disputed this and instead has charged Sconyers with murder.
