Gun safety in childcare centers isn’t a debatable issue

It had been less than a week since the five-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, and how did Gov. Kim Reynolds respond? By blocking proposed state rules that would have regulated the storage of guns present in childcare centers (“Child care gun rules blocked by staff of Reynolds,” Dec. 20).

Iowa is one of the few states without regulations regarding firearms in childcare centers. As the Register reported, the measure Reynolds’ staff rejected would have ensured that childcare directors notify parents if a gun is kept on the premises; required that those guns be locked and stored separately from ammunition; and prohibited daycares from having loaded guns in vehicles used to transport young children.
