Mom says Va. school’s paperwork mistake is forcing 5-year-old girl out of kindergarten

This year, Ashley Bush enrolled her daughter Aaliyah into kindergarten at John F. Pattie Elementary School in Dumfries.

But nearly two months into the school year, 5-year old Aaliyah is being forced to withdraw from class.

“It’s just kind of heartbreaking that they are not really thinking about the child’s feelings in any of this,” said Bush.

Bush said the Prince William County School district sent her a letter that explained Aaliyah was accidentally allowed to enroll by error. The 5 year old’s birthday was 7 days past the September 30th cutoff— which technically made Aaliyah ineligible under Virginia Law.

School leaders told ABC7 they could not comment on individual students.

ABC7 asked Bush if she should have caught the error herself. We also asked her if the school district made an exception for her child, wouldn’t they have to make exceptions for other students?

“I do understand that,” Bush said, “but if [my daughter] has already been in school for an entire quarter, of kindergarten— let the child continue and not punish her for her doing good in school and for an employee error.”

According to the school district’s letter, district leaders offered to pay for the SACC or the School Aged Child Care Program.

Bush said that wouldn’t work with her schedule and she did not believe Aaliyah should be punished for someone else’ error. Aaliyah’s last day of kindergarten is on November 26th.
