Ormond Beach daycare worker gets jail for battering children

A former Ormond Beach daycare worker will spend the next four months in the Volusia County Branch Jail for hitting, slapping and shaking children at the Dream City Academy.

Besides the 120 days in the county jail, Katherine S. Weitz, 66, of Ormond Beach, was sentenced on Tuesday to 10 years of probation, said John Scott, the spokesman for the 7th Circuit State Attorney’s Office.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement in which Weitz pleaded no contest to four counts of child abuse. Circuit Judge Dennis Craig adjudicated her guilty.

Weitz was arrested after an office manager at the child care center on May 23, 2019, heard a child crying, checked a security video and saw Weitz hitting, slapping and shaking kids, a report said. Weitz was fired.

None of the children suffered injuries.

Weitz told investigators that she had lost her temper and that she had been “extremely frustrated and overdid everything.”
