Former daycare employee faces child porn charges

A local daycare is taking precautions after a former employee was arrested on child pornography-related charges.

Parents with children attending Kokum’s Early Enrichment Program (KEEP) through Brandon Friendship Centre received a letter from the organization June 25, advising the charges against a former employee had been brought to their attention and an investigation was underway.

“The investigation is ongoing to ascertain if any children in his care were victimized,” the letter read. “This letter is sent to you as a courtesy as these charges are public record. I would like to assure you that your children’s safety is our number one priority.”

The employee was “dismissed immediately,” said a spokesperson for Brandon Friendship Centre, who declined to be named or divulge his position with the organization.

The spokesperson declined to say how long the former employee had been working at the daycare.

The employee would have worked in both KEEP 1 and KEEP 2, the spokesperson said, as employees tend to alternate between the two.

The investigation was being done as a precautionary measure, the spokesperson noted, adding that no allegations stem from the daycare.

“We are in the process of trying to set up a meeting with the Brandon police officer who investigated as well as the parent committee and the daycare office in order to get the necessary information to hand out,” the spokesperson said.

According to Brandon police, the employee, a 20-year-old man, was arrested on April 15 after uploading several photos and video of his underage girlfriend without her consent.

It is not believed any children in the daycare were victims, BPS spokesperson Sgt. Kirby Sararas said, and BPS is not involved in any internal investigation Brandon Friendship Centre is conducting.

The man, who is charged with making and possessing child pornography, first appeared in court June 10. His next scheduled appearance in August.
