KILLEN —  When Legacy Christian Academy announced the school would be starting a robotics program at the beginning of the school year, students lined up to join.

From an enrollment of 42 students in kindergarten through sixth grade, 13 joined the new robotics team, nearly a third of the student body.

The team members are in fourth through sixth grades.

“The interest has been phenomenal, and we filled both a girls and boys team,” said Anita Clounch, a math and science teacher, and robotics sponsor.

The program was implemented by a Mission 100 grant through SCORE with its STEM Outreach program. It provided two VEX robot kits for the teams.

With STEM activities at school, the robots have been a major focus for the students, Clounch said.

The teams built the robots and just recently completed the programming. Their first competition will be Jan. 12, the Alabama SCORE IQ tourney at Northwest-Shoals Community College.
