It does take a village: Support networks make all the difference for single parents

By age 26, Rachel Bruner was a single mother raising four children younger than age 6. At the time, she worked in the restaurant industry, which meant night shifts not conducive to formal child care.

Bruner shares custody and co-parents with her ex-husband, but many times she missed out on opportunities to pick up extra shifts – and make extra money – because she couldn’t find someone to watch her children when they were staying with her.
