Mother of baby who was hit by Milton day care worker speaks out

For the first time, we’re hearing from the mother of a baby who deputies said was hit by a worker at a Milton daycare.

That worker, 18-year-old Haley Goodman, is now charged with battery.

Channel 3 News showed you a live feed video taken from the Kids Discovery #6 Daycare in Milton in October.

In it, you can see a worker drag a toddler, then shove the little girl’s head into the mat.

We counted the woman doing this more than a dozen times within ten minutes.

The little girl in the video is named Charlie Shirah. She’s only 1.5 years old.

“I was upset. I was angry. I was sad. I was hurt,” said Charlie’s mother, Bobbi Shirah.

The video launched a Department of Children and Families investigation into the daycare.

Kristen Lupola, the day care’s director of operations, said Goodman was immediately fired. She said two others were also fired for knowing what happened, but not reporting it.

Last month, Goodman was arrested and charged with battery.

Shirah said she wants Goodman to face stiffer penalties.

“Yeah, she abused her, but they’re only wanting to charge her with the battery? I’m not settling for that. I’m going to try to push as far as I can for her,” said Shirah.

Channel 3 News had an interview scheduled with Lupola Wednesday.

However, that morning she canceled.

Lupola said she may talk when Goodman is scheduled to appear in court Friday.

We asked Shirah if she believes the daycare is fit to take care of children right now.

“No. I don’t. I don’t,” she responded.

Shirah pulled Charlie from the daycare.

Deputies said the baby didn’t have any physical injuries, but Shirah said the damage is done.

“When I lay her down for naps, if I go back there to check on her… she will throw herself under a cover and lay there stiff as aboard. Like ‘I’m not doing it, momma, I’m not gonna get up’,” she said.

Shirah now has this message for Goodman.

“Don’t work around kids again. You don’t have the patience for it. I hope you don’t get to work around kids again. Take fault for what you did…This is the choice you made. Face your consequences just like everybody else has to when they break the law,” she said.

Goodman has pleaded not guilty. She’s scheduled to appear in court in Santa Rosa County on Friday.
