Ex-daycare worker sent to jail for slapping, shaking kids

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A former worker at a Florida daycare center has been sentenced to four months in jail for slapping and shaking children in her care, court officials said.

In addition, Katherine S. Weitz, 66, was ordered to serve 10 years of probation following a plea agreement in which she pleaded no contest to four counts of child abuse, said John Scott, spokesman for the 7th Circuit State Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reported that Weitz was arrested on May 23 after an office manager at Dream City Academy in Ormond Beach heard a child crying, checked security video and saw the woman hitting and shaking children.

None of the children suffered injuries, authorities said.

Weitz told investigators she lost her temper and had been “extremely frustrated and overdid everything.”
