Cincinnati ranks among top 10 cities for millennial mothers

Cincinnati is one of the best places for millennial mothers to call home, according to a new study.

Financial planning website SmartAsset ranked Cincinnati No. 7 for new moms of the millennial generation. The study is based on nine metrics including average earnings for women, concentration of obstetricians and gynecologists, and average annual cost of childcare.

Cincinnati’s biggest draw was its affordability with the lowest annual rent as a percentage of women’s earnings in the nation at 31.02%. Annual housing costs as a percentage of women’s earnings were also among the nation’s top 20 at 36.87%.

One major drawback mentioned for mothers in Cincinnati is the high child and infant mortality rate in Hamilton County with 74.28 deaths among children under the age of 18 per 1,000 live births and 9.32 deaths among children under the age of one per 1,000 live births, ranking 10th and 7th in the nation, respectively.

Other Cincinnati highlights include:

  • 9.85% of millennial women in the area recently had a child
  • Women’s median earnings in Cincinnati are $30,564
  • The annual cost of childcare in the area is $8,317.

Cincinnati ranked second on the list among cities in the state of Ohio with Youngstown coming in at No. 6. The Queen City narrowly outranked Columbus, which was No. 8.
