Preschool Story Time develops toddlers’ skills to prepare for school

Preschool Story Time and After School Activities are resuming after the brief post-Summer Reading hiatus. Preschool Story Time on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. focuses on developing skills that will help children be ready for school. Toddlers will enjoy a variety of activities including songs and movement activities that build motor and social skills, increase independence and enhance language ability in your child.

The After School Activity for this Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. is going to be a back-to-school craft project. All supplies will be provided for kids to create a pencil cup (or holder of many other items!) out of recycled cans and other materials. The After School Activities are geared toward ages 5-10, but all ages are welcome. Activities vary from educational games, building challenges, crafts and more. No registration is required for either of these programs and both are free to attend.

Don’t wait to start projects around the house or garage for fear of not having the right tools for the job, breaking instead of making, or lack of knowledge on how to proceed from step one to the end, but instead “increase your loose tolerance.” Adam Savage, star of Discovery Channel’s Mythbusters, has loved creating since he was young, in fact, one of his passions for making “stuff” initially started with cosplay in high school.

In “Every Tool’s a Hammer,” he shares 40-plus years of knowledge and creativity to inspire anyone to begin a project right away using a tolerance method, which allows a person to utilize whatever is handy when you don’t own the perfect tools for the job. Savage acknowledges that creating is messy and there are often mishaps, but with all the sage advice he shares from his long years of making, building and breaking, anyone can utilize his “toolbox” of problem-solving techniques and maker lessons inside this book to explore their creative side. The book also includes lessons from other well-known makers and creators, including Nick Offerman, Guillermo de Toro and Tom Sachs.

Both of these titles can be found in the Adult Non-Fiction section. “131 Method” by Chalene Johnson is under call number 615.85 J63o and “Every Tool’s a Hammer” by Adam Savage can be found at 680.92 Sa92e.
