Police escort 80 children to safety from Philadelphia gunfire

PHILADELPHIA (WTHR) – Police and daycare workers helped escort dozens of children to safety during an active shooter situation in Philadelphia Wednesday.

As police dealt with at least one gunman, who had wounded at least six officers, about 80 children were trapped in a nearby daycare. Shortly after 7 p.m., two-and-a-half hours after the shooting started, officers and teachers escorted the children from the Precious Babies Learning Academy to safety.

Some of the children held hands with officers as they walked to a safe location, others were carried by uniformed officers.

The daycare is about a block from the scene of the shooting, which remained active at 9 p.m., with two officers reportedly still inside a home where the shooting occurred.

The owner of the daycare told NBC Philadelphia they had kept the children in “shelter-in-place” mode while they waited for instructions from police.
